Map of Boston: Detail 1

About this Map

From Rand McNally's Indexed Atlas of the World, this map's primary purpose was to guide modern businessmen in their day-to-day travels through the city. Thus, the left inset clearly shows the rail routes into Boston, and the right is a detail of the business district.

The map also shows areas of Boston that were being filled and developed in 1891. The brand new Harvard Bridge crossed the Charles River to a section of the Cambridge shore that was being filled and would soon be occupied by M. I. T. On the Boston side, the newly completed Back Bay Fens was surrounded by marshes that were still being filled. On the South Boston Flats a massive land making project had already created the Fan Pier area and was continuing to fill the flats.
