This street plan of Boston is one of the later maps produced by the Walker Company, the last important lithography firm established in Boston in the nineteenth century. This map was intended as a street, or traveler's, guide for it was folded and sold in a paper cover. When compared with an 1891 map (see Map 17), the Walker map shows some of the changes that had occurred in Boston in the intervening years -- the Cambridge side of the river had been filled, the South Boston Flats project completed, most of South Bay filled, and Columbus Park had been created on the west shore of Old Harbor. |
