About this Map This is the last map drawn by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain. It extends from Greenland at the upper right to Chesapeake Bay at the lower left. Champlain's map was probably the first to show most of the Great Lakes. Grand Lac is Lake Superior, which Champlain never actually saw. Mer deuce is Lake Huron. Below it and above La nation neutre is a rudimentary Lake Erie. Lac St. Louis is Lake Ontario. In the vicinity of the Hudson River and just north of Long Island ("Isle de L'Ascension"), the church probably indicates the Dutch settlement at what is now New York City.
